The GDP per capita in Syria is around US $ 5000 only, one of the lowest in the world. Syria is rich in terms of oil, agriculture, and various industries, but such revenues are directed to the benefit of Assad and his regime only. The reason is that Assad and his regime consider Syria as their own milking cow. For example, the sales revenues from oil only totals up to US$ 15 billion yearly. This amount does not get into the country's balance sheet. It goes to the pockets of Assad and his thugs. This has been the case for 40 years. If you work out the amount that has been looted over this period, we are talking about US$ 500 - 700 billion.
This is one of the reasons why Assad and his thugs should be brought to justice, not to mention the crimes committed against humanity.
