More than 1.6 million people have fled Syria to seek protection in neighbouring countries.

Refugees say the increased fighting and changing of control of towns and villages has resulted in more and more civilians deciding to leave. The situation has deteriorated rapidly over the past four months when compared to the previous 20 months of
the conflict.
